Sportwriters can do anything. We file quickly and often, transforming the drama on the court into elegance on the page.
I’ve covered five Olympic Games, seven N.B.A. finals, the iconic 1999 Women’s World Cup, the Cleveland Browns, the New Jersey Nets, the New York Knicks, the Stanley Cup finals, the Indy 500, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Larry Bird.
Throughout my career, I have always written about the people behind the games, about history and psychology. These themes came together in my critically acclaimed narrative non-fiction book about the New York City Marathon, A Race Like No Other: 26.2 Miles Through the Streets of New York (Harper 2008).
Since writing sports, I have covered education, state courts, the police beat, food, Brooklyn, and immigration. No matter the sport or the subject, I will always be a Philly fan, not one who throws snowballs, but one who appreciates unique characters and talent.
